High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
At West Pymble Public School, we acknowledge that potential manifests in diverse ways among all learners. Our approach to High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is seamlessly integrated into daily teaching and learning, driven by a strong emphasis on formative assessment, research-supported methods, and tailored differentiation to address the unique strengths and needs of each student. Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
Below are some of the evidence-based strategies employed in our classrooms to support every student’s growth:
Utilisation of Formative Assessment Techniques
Educators consistently implement diagnostic tools, observation records, and student self-evaluations to pinpoint individual strengths and areas for development across various domains. This timely feedback guides lesson planning and differentiation, fostering ongoing student progress and engagement.
Differentiated Learning and Adaptive Grouping
Learning tasks are crafted with varying levels of complexity, enabling students to work independently, in pairs, or within flexible groups that reflect their interests or abilities. This ensures suitable challenge while promoting teamwork, leadership, motivation, and social interaction skills.
Embedding High Expectations in Planning
Teachers clearly communicate high standards through learning objectives that promote critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to set personal goals and engage in reflection, cultivating a growth mindset, resilience, and confidence, which drives deeper understanding and improved achievement.
Empowering Student Leadership and Voice
Students lead projects, participate in discussions, and contribute to school initiatives aligned with their interests. They are involved in goal-setting and self-assessment processes, nurturing a sense of ownership, motivation, and leadership capabilities.
Continuous Professional Learning and Collaboration
Our teaching staff regularly participate in professional development focused on HPGE strategies and collaborate to exchange effective practices and design differentiated curriculum units. This ongoing learning enhances instructional quality and consistency, ensuring all students benefit from robust talent development programs.
